TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Southeast Topeka will soon be home to additional affordable housing.
SENT Topeka was awarded $46 million in tax credits, which it was able to channel toward its Fremont-Hill development project.
The project will be developed at 29th and Fremont.
A 176-unit apartment complex leads the way, housing residents of various financial backgrounds.
“We believe that healthy neighborhoods are mixed-income neighborhoods,” SENT Topeka founder Johnathan Sublet said. “Our goal is to create mixed-income housing, not all LMI or low-to-moderate income housing.”
Along with a 51-home subdivision near the complex approaching its own groundbreaking, and four net-zero homes currently being built, the Hi-Crest neighborhood will soon have over 200 new housing units available.
SENT’s projects take time while working toward long-term foundations.
“I believe everybody should have a pathway to homeownership, and it comes in steps,” Sublet said. “So I want to continue to be a part of building bridges.”
The expansion could even lead to growth in other sectors.
“We’re in communication with our schools because that’s gonna push a lot of new students into our schools,” Sublet said. “We’re hoping that it pushes enough that where we see a bond issue come up to build some new schools in our neighborhood.”
SENT’s first home is set to open later this year.
The group says stable housing is a cornerstone in their mission to eventually drive the need for their services down to zero.
