TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – SENT Topeka’s mission to bring more affordable housing to the city is in full swing.
The organization hosted Topekans at a workshop on Monday evening to teach them what it takes to buy a new home.
“We want to make sure that they are really understanding the process, they know all their rights, they know what they should be looking for, even when dealing with us,” SENT Executive Director Johnathan Sublet said. “And they’re in the best position possible.”
Sublet explains the organization is hosting the workshops to walk future homeowners through the process.
“It’s not, ‘We just give you a list of stuff to go do,’” he said. “But we actually connect you now with our neighbor advocates and our community liaisons to walk besides you if there’s some area that you’re not ready in yet to help you get prepared.”
Attendees say they are thankful to have an opportunity like this in the Capital City.
“I think it’s very important because it’s an opportunity that hasn’t risen in Topeka before,” attendee Maria Anderson said. “No matter what your income level is or where you stand credit-wise, they’re helping you move forward in your life.”
“I think it’s just nice to have the idea of a community that you can make your own,” attendee Leslie White said. “And you can make yourself plugged in and a part of what’s going on.”
They also say they hope SENT’s mission can be a catalyst for more low-income housing across the city.
“There’s many neighborhoods in Topeka that need help,” attendee Randy White said. “And need new renovations and options for low-income housing.”
“It shows the rest of the community that neighborhoods can improve,” Anderson said. “We have neighborhood improvement associations and there’s one here. They’re working hard at helping this neighborhood grow and expand.”
SENT is hosting the workshops monthly. The next one is March 22.
