“At SENT Inc., volunteers don’t just give their time; they invest in the future of our neighborhoods. Their impact is immeasurable, and their passion is contagious.” — Johnathan Sublet

At SENT Topeka, we believe that every step we take together with our neighbors moves our community closer to hope, stability, and self-sufficiency. Since 2018, we’ve dedicated ourselves to supporting Shawnee County—especially the Hi-Crest neighborhood—through holistic services in education, housing, and community health and wellness. But our progress wouldn’t be possible without one critical piece: our volunteers. We know that resilient communities don’t just happen—they’re built on trust, cooperation, and meaningful connections among neighbors. Every community has unique strengths and resources to offer, and by walking side-by-side with our neighbors, we can bring about positive and lasting change.

This month, we’re excited to celebrate the stories of our incredible volunteers—their dedication, their heart for service, and the powerful ripple effects their actions have throughout Hi-Crest and beyond. Volunteers at SENT Topeka are more than just helping hands; they’re role models, supporters, and friends to the very people we strive to serve. Every hour they spend and every connection they make brings us closer to our mission of a thriving, supportive community.

Our volunteers are at the heart of our mission, embodying values of dignity, pride, and community ownership. By lending their time, skills, and hearts, volunteers help turn our vision of a thriving community into a reality. Their contributions not only help sustain SENT’s programs but also create a strong network of compassionate, connected individuals who foster a culture of resilience and hope.

For those who join us, volunteering becomes a path of personal growth, giving a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment. The experience of seeing lives transformed—of witnessing families find stable housing, students succeed, and neighbors access critical health services—redefines what it means to be part of something greater than oneself. When you volunteer with SENT, you’re not just giving back; you’re helping empower individuals, families, and an entire community. The work is as varied as the people who join us.

In the video below, meet Jerry Lee, whose involvement at the Southside Filling Station is nothing short of transformative. He leads significant aspects of the operation, managing ordering, planning, and directing front-end activities on pantry days. For Jerry, volunteering is more than a role; it’s a source of profound joy and purpose. He shares that this period of his life, spent helping others, is one of the happiest he’s experienced. His unwavering spirit proves that, no matter one’s past, there is always a future worth investing in, and every individual has unique value to contribute.
