TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Substance use disorders can be a tough area of mental health to face.
Tricia McCourt, addiction specialist at SENT Topeka, visited Eye on NE Kansas to take a closer look at the issue.
SENT Topeka was awarded a Kansas Fights Addiction grant this year to further the assistance programs for their southeast Topeka community.
McCourt said 24 percent of adults in Kansas experience a mental illness in 2024, and 18 percent of adults faced a substance use disorder. She said studies have found 1.38 million Kansans live in areas that do not have a sufficient number of mental health professionals.
SENT Topeka brings services to what could otherwise be an under-served part of the Capital City. McCourt said they not only offer help for substance use disorder, they also offer therapy for other mental health conditions, neurofeedback, massage therapy, and assistance with basic needs such as food, housing and medical care.
