“When the Bricks Fell Off My Shoulders” – Linda’s Story

Substance Use Disorder doesn’t just affect the person using—it ripples through families.

Linda joined Al-Anon not because she struggled with addiction, but because someone she loved did. As the family member of an alcoholic, she was carrying the silent weight of stress, confusion, and heartbreak. She needed support, and Al-Anon became her lifeline.

“I found a place where I heard bits and pieces of my own story and realized I was not alone. Knowing that others understood what I was going through helped me heal.”

Through years of showing up, listening, and growing in community, Linda didn’t just find understanding—she found freedom. About four years into her recovery journey, she noticed something powerful:

“I literally felt lighter—like the bricks were no longer stacked on my shoulders. It was amazing, and I never want to go back.”

Now, 12 years into recovery, she lives with peace, clarity, and boundaries that protect her mental and emotional health. And when old patterns start to creep in?

“I stop, identify the root cause, and make the changes I need to delete it from my life.”

Her advice to others?

“Go to at least six meetings. They’re all different. Find the one that fits you. Keep going. You’ll find peace.”

Support groups like Al-Anon offer healing for those living in the shadow of addiction. You are not alone—and there’s strength in being seen and heard.
